Tsubo - The Acupoints

The energy flows through the Meridian, which is found between the skin surface and the bone. The Qi is said to flow in the Meridians through the flesh, despite the fact that no anatomical cross-section will show the Meridian. Along the pathway trajectory of the Meridian, we find the Tsubo.

The access point to the energy flow, a Tsubo is shaped like a light bulb, with the large round end being the Meridian itself; and the other end being the surface of the skin. It is like a valve.

Tsubo are used to directly access the Qi flow, and through treatment, influence changes to the characteristics of the Qi.

Tsubo themselves also have many varying characteristics; Shiatsu practitioners and Acupuncturists alike have many different techniques just for approaching then treating Tsubo.

In a way, a Tsubo is like a steam valve- too much pressure will simply close the valve, while gentle pressure allows the 'steam,' or excessive energy, to be released- with a dispersion technique.
Tsubo however are like 2-way valves, unlike the steam valve- they are also used for treating
conditions of deficiency, to absorb energy;
and not only releasing excesses.

There are 309 Tsubo on the traditional Meridans.

The Meridians have varying numbers of Tsubo along them, from only 9 to 67; and each point can have a dozen or more actions and effects. Some are used primarily for tonification or dispersion, others can be used for both. There are many ways of grouping the points, for classification as well as multiple-point formulas for treatment: the mighty point combinations. While the Tsubo can be used individually and in a specific order, carefully chosen groups of powerful points can be used simultaneously for tremendous results; the way combining chemicals can form compounds, and change their very nature.
